Robots used around the world today are made for specialized purposes: industrial robots can only assemble machines, sweeping robots can only sweep the ground, and mine-clearing robots can only mine. But researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology hope that one day robots can do more: use other tools and objects to accomplish other tasks.
The project was funded by the US Naval Research Office for $900,000. Under the leadership of Professor Mike Stilman, the Georgia Tech team will develop a robot that uses a custom algorithm to scan random objects in a room for three years. Use these objects to assemble more complex tools based on the data stored in the database. Then use your own tools to complete more complex tasks.
