From the current point of view, the mainstream TV display technology is divided into two camps: quantum dots and OLED. The former has been sought after by manufacturers such as Samsung, Sony, and TCL, while OLED fans include LG, Changhong, and Konka.

Judging from the present pattern of distribution, the two sides can be said to be evenly matched, and under the circumstances that there is support from the big brothers, the debate about who is the display technology of the future will intensify.

Recently, Tencent home appliances took this question to the birthplace of one of the camps, LG Display (referred to as LGD)'s Paju factory in South Korea. LG Display P7, P8 and P9 three panel factories, module production lines and OLED panel production lines are located here.

OLED is no longer a TV screen

According to the vision of LG Display, display functions can be implemented on any object in the future. In terms of LGD's official terminology, it means: "The display will become part of people's lives and the natural world, with characteristics of Everywhere, Anyform, and Borderless."

Indeed, because there is no backlight, OLEDs can be very free-form and can handle a variety of application scenarios. We not only saw circular OLED displays and oversized 3D OLED screens at Nanshan Tower OLED Hall. Even here you can see tunnel displays made of OLED screens.

When I saw the use of OLED displays in such a large area in public places, I also asked the staff of LGD: “Is this not afraid of bad?” LGD staff told me that these OLED displays in public places are regularly maintained In addition, if they are used normally, for now, their life span can reach more than ten years without any problems.

OLED problems solved?

The reason why the industry has always been skeptical about OLED large-screen display technology, the problem is mainly focused on: life, yield, price and other aspects. Even before there was a voice, the only remaining advantage of OLED was only black field and flexibility.

Since OLEDs are different from LCD TVs, they do not require a backlight source and each pixel can emit light independently. Based on this, OLED organic TVs can present the purest black, natural colors. When Tencent's home appliance visited the LGD LCD plant OLED showroom in Paju, we can see that the effect of OLED TV in black performance is significantly better than the existing quantum dot products.

Coupled with the flexible and flexible characteristics of the OLED itself, it can not only be as thin as 0.97mm, but also can be presented in various different forms. The convex surface, the concave surface, the double-walled wall, and the front and rear double-curved surfaces are all without any problem.

As for the more "sharp" issues of life expectancy, yield, and price, Lu Xiangde, LG Display's OLED business minister, said in an interview with Tencent Appliances that these have already been resolved.

More than a year of OLED TVs (eight hours a day)

Lu Xiangde told Tencent that home appliances, the current lifespan of OLED products can be ensured in more than 50,000 hours, if you watch 8 hours a day, you can use more than 17 years. In addition, for the “residual image” problem we often say, the OLED panel is also completely resolved by the image quality improvement algorithm and the improvement of the component characteristics. At present, it is possible to ensure that no image sticking phenomenon occurs for 10,000 hours.

Detecting the screen through the instrument and automatically repairing the "ghost image" problem

During the OLED laboratory visits, LGD related technical personnel also said that even if an OLED TV is open 24 hours a day, the maximum brightness is reduced by about 5%, but it will not be anywhere on the screen. There is a residual image or "burn-in" condition.

As for the yield rate, Lu Xiangde believes that OLED is more complicated than LCD technology. It takes 10 years for LCD to ensure 80% yield, and OLED has been achieved in only 2 years, and the yield rate will grow rapidly in the future.

If the problem of longevity and yield has already been solved, then the biggest obstacle to OLED TVs in front of consumers is price. From the current market point of view, OLED TVs have mainly 55-inch and 65-inch two specifications, but the prices are above 10,000 yuan, the highest even reached about 60,000 yuan.

Lu Xiangde frankly stated: "When the OLED TV price can reach 5,000 yuan or less, I do not know." But at the same time Lu Xiangde believes that, on the one hand, because OLED does not have a backlight source, the future is a great advantage in terms of cost.
