Ultra-low power connectivity and battery-free sensing solutions make it possible to develop new IoT use cases.
ON Semiconductor has released two new boards (shields) that further extend the capabilities of its recently announced Internet of Things (IoT) Development Kit (IDK) platform. With the introduction of these two new shields with Bluetooth low energy technology and intelligent passive sensors (SPS), customers can now create a wide range of unique features for smart home/building, smart city, industrial automation and mobile medical applications. The Bluetooth low-power shield is equipped with the recently introduced Bluetooth 5 certified RSL10 multi-protocol radio system single-chip (SoC). With the industry's lowest deep sleep current and receive power consumption, the RSL10 helps manufacturers create IoT devices with longer battery life. Moreover, the small size of the RSL10 helps to achieve the ultra-compact, cost-effective terminal design required for low-power IoT sensor networks. By integrating the Bluetooth low-power shield with IDK, customers have access to complementary connectivity options that extend connectivity, sensing and actuator options, including lighting and motors.
The SPS Shield extends the capabilities of IDK to capture temperature, humidity and pressure data from ON Semiconductor's batteryless SPS sensors. These sensors are ideal for industrial and other applications where access is difficult but monitoring is required. Sensors for these applications must have zero maintenance features, and battery replacement is a challenge. Pairing the SPS shield with the IDK enables rapid prototyping of IoT applications that require battery-free sensing, wide-area or local coupling, and actuation options.
These new shields extend IDK's configurable modular choices for sensing, actuation and wired/wireless connectivity, giving application designers complete flexibility in the absence of selected communication protocols. Because the application shield provides an out-of-the-box solution, developers can quickly and easily launch projects and deliver data directly to the cloud for value-added services, including analytics.
IDK Shields are fully documented, including complete design schematics, board layouts, and Gerber files to speed design transitions from concept to development to production. The industry-standard interface ensures that current and future modules from ON Semiconductor and other suppliers can be seamlessly integrated into the design, eliminating the need for a simple “clip-cut†approach to end product design, reducing development time, cost and risk.
