The world's brightest micro LED display panel is about to debut

Following Samsung's release of the 146-inch modular MicroLED TV product "The Wall" at the CES 2018 conference in January this year, many manufacturers showed MicroLED products at major exhibitions.

At the 2018 International Display Technology Conference (ICDT 2018) held in April, Micro LED displays were exhibited on Taiwanese manufacturers Playnitride and JDC. In addition, at the 2018 International Display Conference (Display Week 2018), which opened on May 20th, Sweden's leading μLED device manufacturer GLō (Google Investment) and Lotus Optoelectronics jointly demonstrated the world's brightest Micro LED display panel. .

Samsung

The Micro LED TV exhibited by Samsung at CES 2018 is a micrometer (μm)-size LED self-illuminating TV. Because it is rectangular, it is more compact than the circular shape of the traditional LED, plus the material relationship, while improving the luminous efficiency. The life of the light source is reduced, and the power consumption is reduced, but the solution is a public version, and a 146-inch full-plane LED TV is assembled on site, making it the largest model in the home TV field.

The Micro LED display exhibited at ICDT 2018 made the visitors amazed, with a total of three colors, white, green and full color. The 0.89" display is applied to the watch, the ppi is about 169, and the blue LED chip + Phosphor colorization scheme is used; in addition, there is a 0.8" display, the ppi is increased to 230, and the monochrome scheme of the green LED chip is used; A full-color 0.89" display, using a chip combination of RGB LEDs, is about 103 ppi.

Helian Optoelectronics

And Lotus Optoelectronics exhibited at ICDT 2018 is a Micro LED display with Silicon as the backplane. The display technology has been developed to 0.7”, and the display size can reach 4K resolution. Although it is a monochrome display, the Pixel Size can reach 3.74. Mm, with high display.

On Display Week 2018, the Micro LED display panel exhibited by GLō and Helian Optoelectronics adopts the developed and integrated Micro LED (10μm), which is compatible with JDC's new silicon-based backplane JD67E2, which can provide high brightness and contrast. Display, which is beneficial for applications in watches, mobile phones, tablets, displays (HUD) and augmented reality (AR) products.

At present, OLEDs may dominate, but Micro LEDs, which combine many advantages, may become the next generation of displays. Jeffrey Li, JDC's application director, believes that they have foreseen the rise of Micro LEDs and have the ability to help customers develop a wide range of new products.

He also said that JD67E2 proves our ability in the μLED field. We are excited to offer something that the industry has been waiting for - silicon that meets the needs of Micro LEDs. Our Micro LED backplane technology can be tailored to each project, allowing us to create special silicon for low power AR head-mounted helmets, automotive headlights and more.

The full-color JD67E2 has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 with a pixel pitch of 8um and provides excellent current uniformity through proprietary current source pixels. The uniformity of the entire array is better than 1%.

In addition to increasing brightness and contrast, JDC pixel-by-pixel pulse width modulation is ideal for Micro LEDs because digital switching allows for precise and consistent coloring; a single on-state current will provide a single, stable color. In contrast, analog drive schemes provide different current levels through the Micro LED, which can cause wavelength changes and color shifts.

Although many manufacturers have exhibited Micro LED display products, there is still a long way to go before commercialization. According to LEDinside analysis, the cost of the Micro LED display panel is still much higher than that of the conventional LCD or OLED display panel. The current challenges include how to achieve the micron level of LEDs, and how to transfer micron-sized LEDs to the backplane to make pixels, which tests the manufacturer's technical process and production capacity.

Because the current mainstream 55-65-inch LCD TV price is too killing. The cost of including LCD and OLED can be suppressed to a level acceptable to consumers. In the short term, the cost and price of Micro LED TV are difficult to compete in this field. But the market above 100 inches is another matter.

Due to the dramatic increase in production costs of LCDs and OLEDs over 100 inches at this stage, Micro LED TVs have a chance to cut through. As the technology and production process of Micro LEDs matures in the future, there will be opportunities to cut into mainstream sizes.

Portable Teaching Projector

Teaching and training meetings, classroom teaching; traditional projectors are not easy to carry. In school classrooms, due to the naughty students, projectors are not safe in the classroom and are easily damaged by students. The portability of micro projectors makes up for the teaching vacancies. In the future, teachers will give lectures. You only need to store the data in the projector to show it to students for teaching, saving the trouble of textbooks and handwriting with pens and chalks.
