TI's new fixed gain Class D audio power amplifier series

Texas Instruments (TI) today announced a family of fixed-gain Class-D audio power amplifiers for portable applications that require higher performance in a limited board space, including cell phones, portable media players (PMPs), handhelds Game consoles and portable mini speakers. The new TPA203xD1 amplifier complements TI's popular TPA2010D1 variable gain Class D amplifier. The new TI device integrates and is highly matched to an external input resistor, allowing designers to reduce overall board size by nearly half. The new device also increases the power supply ripple rejection ratio (PSRR) by 20dB and the common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) by 12dB compared to the 5% external resistor matching that portable consumer electronics typically use to reduce costs.

For the TPA203xD1 family of devices, TI achieves up to 88% Class D audio power amplifier efficiency, capable of driving 2.75 W with a 5V supply with a 4 ohm resistor, and a Class A weighted noise floor of only 27μVrms. The amplifier is available in a small 1.5 x 1.5 mm wafer level chip package (WCSP), eliminating the need for bond wires and leadframes in QFN and BGA packages, while the printed circuit board footprint is only 2.5 mm x 1.7 mm.

Nicholas Holland, TI's marketing manager for high-performance simulation, points out: "As more and more portable audio consumers begin to adopt Class D amplifiers, TI's expertise and innovative products have undergone a highly competitive market test and have achieved tremendous Success. The TPA203xD1 amplifier is 2.5 times more efficient than a Class AB amplifier, helping customers extend battery life for a better audio experience while saving board space."

In addition to reducing board size and reducing system cost, the new solution integrates and is highly matched to external input resistors, effectively improving some of the key performance parameters of the power amplifier, such as CMRR and PSRR. The CMRR reflects the performance of the amplifier to cancel common input noise, such as audible buzzing caused by adjacent RF transmissions. PSRR reflects the performance of the amplifier to suppress power supply noise interference. Typically, the TPA203xD1 amplifier has a CMRR of -69 dB and a PSRR of -73 dB at 217 Hz, making it ideal for a wide range of wireless portable applications that typically operate in noisy environments.

The TPA203xD1 device is pin-compatible with the TPA2010D1 audio power amplifier to meet the amplification needs of a wide range of portable audio applications. The output gain of the TPA203xD1 device is fixed, eliminating the need for external resistors to optimize performance and increase efficiency, while the TPA2010D1 meets the application's need for variable gain.

The TPA203xD1 family of devices complements TI's portfolio of high-performance analog and DSP products for the portable audio signal chain, including DSP digital audio platforms, audio data converters, clocks, Class D audio power amplifiers, and capless headphone amplifiers. TI provides relevant silicon technology, software, system technology and support to help customers quickly bring products to market.

The TPA2032D1, TPA2033D1, and TPA2034D1 implement fixed gain amplification of 2 V/V (6 dB), 3 V/V (9.5 dB), and 4V/V (12 dB), respectively. The TPA203xD1 device is available now in volume quantities and is priced at $0.60 in 1,000-piece quantities. The device is available in a leadless 1.5 x 1.5 mm WCSP package. In addition, an evaluation board (EVM) is available for all three devices.
