TI SensorTag kit assists Bluetooth low energy smartphone application development

Texas Instruments (TI) announced the launch of the Bluetooth Low Energy SensorTag kit. The kit includes SensorTag App and sample applicaTIons for download. Smartphone application developers can enter the field of Bluetooth low energy technology without the need of hardware and software skills, which will enable more and more new smartphones. And tablets benefit. The TI kit integrates six sensors to support countless applications such as health and wellness, educational tools, remote control of toys, and mobile phone accessories, which can be controlled by consumers' smartphones, tablets, or laptops.

Development work is convenient and fast. This out-of-the-box SensorTag enables developers to download free applications for smartphones, select application examples, and demonstrate applications using SensorTag sensors in just a few minutes. This provides developers with a practically feasible design entry point to use the CC2541 Bluetooth Low Energy System-on-Chip (SoC) to quickly implement the “appcessory” type of smartphones. CC2541 is supported by TI's patent-free BLE-Stack software, technical documentation, reference designs, and the TI E2E community. Appcessory is a small control (gadget) for monitoring using a smartphone application.

Oyvind Birkenes, general manager of TI's wireless connectivity solutions, pointed out that for manufacturers, Bluetooth low energy provides a very simple and efficient shortcut to connect their applications to the cloud through smartphones, tablets or laptops. The SensorTag kit helps manufacturers quickly and easily evaluate the advantages of devices joining Bluetooth low energy and build new applications.

The SensorTag kit is currently specifically designed for iOS applications. The iOS SensorTag App used in the evaluation process can be downloaded for free here. As Bluetooth low energy devices continue to evolve, TI plans to provide SensorTag Apps and related support for Android and Windows 8.

SensorTag integrates 6 MEMS sensors from third-party vendors, including InvenSense (gyroscope), Kionix (accelerometer), Sensirion (temperature and humidity sensing), TDK (barometer), magnetometer and TI IR temperature sensing Device (TMP006). In addition, some application developers have already adopted SensorTag to launch related products, including companies such as Ace Sensor and ByteWorks.

The SensorTag kit based on CC2541 is a perfect complement to TI's Bluetooth solution, and TI's dual-mode Bluetooth solution also includes CC2564 Bluetooth v4.0 dual-mode QFN components, BlueLink 7.0, WiLink 6.0, WiLink 7.0, and WiLink 8.0 solutions.

The SensorTag kit (CC2541DK-SENSOR) is now available and the recommended price is $ 25.
