Texas Instruments (TI) today announced an analog input audio subsystem that integrates TI's proven stereo Class D power amplifiers with stereo DirectPathTM headphone amplifiers in a small package. The flexibility of the audio subsystem allows customers to select different input-to-output configurations and program design parameters to optimize audio performance. Integrating all amplifier channels into a single integrated circuit reduces bill of materials and reduces cost while making the final design of many products, including wireless handsets, portable DVD players, portable game consoles, and portable media players, more stylish.The TPA2050D4 audio subsystem includes a stereo Class D amplifier that provides 1.4 W of output drive per channel for 8 ohm speakers with up to 90% efficiency for extended battery life in portable applications. In addition, the subsystem features a low-noise stereo DirectPath headphone amplifier that eliminates the need for DC blocking output capacitors, reducing component count.
The audio subsystem features two stereo single-ended inputs or a stereo differential input for better common-mode noise rejection. In addition, users can program different gains and modes with a 1.8V I2C compatible interface. For example, each input channel not only has 32 step volume controls, but it also provides an additional four-stage gain control for the headphone amplifier. In this way, if the earphone and the speaker are used at the same time, the volume of the two can be achieved, which brings more flexibility to the customer. The voltage limiter on the headphone amplifier helps to avoid hearing damage at high volume levels and meets the highest volume standards.
