Oculus is trying to use the "focal plane display" technology to implement focus and depth correction on the software and hardware to address one of the key causes of VR motion sickness and eye strain: lack of retinal blur. According to a paper published by the Oculus research team, the problem is that the distance between the projected image and the user's eyes is fixed. We now understand that researchers have already tested a prototype headline and solved this problem with some hardware technology and software algorithms that can dynamically change focus and illumination based on a variety of factors.
The researchers found that by dynamically changing the focus of the VR scene and hardware that can adapt to software conditions based on the user's gaze, they can significantly reduce eye fatigue and vertigo.
Although this prototype device looks very close to the current Oculus Rift, it is completely different. Prototypes include other components such as beam splitters and polarizers, which essentially change the way the display image is sent to the head. Researchers have tried different configurations in software, as well as different numbers of adaptive planes and focal planes, and compared them with the results of a single fixed plane and multiple fixed planes. The researchers used very realistic VR scenes for testing, which made it easy to compare with real-world situations and objectively measure error factors such as color, depth perception, and focus.
They finally found that the configuration of the four focal planes can achieve the most real focus. By adding adaptive techniques and adjusting to multi-focal planes and optimizing them on the software side, they can create high-resolution realistic VR scenes.
This solution requires a lot of optimization and specialized hardware, making Oculus's new technology difficult to apply to current VR systems. The research team is developing an in-place upgrade optimization framework that can dynamically apply optimization to almost any VR software, but development takes time, and if there is no available hardware, this has little effect.
