After NB-IoT, eMTC becomes the second card of the cellular Internet of Things

The Internet of Things market has just begun. This trillion-dollar market cake, the piece based on the carrier network, is fermenting. After the NB-IoT freezes the standard in June this year, it has become a weapon for operators to cut into low power consumption, low speed and wide coverage. However, for the Internet of Things with various needs, NB-IoT can only meet a part, and NB- The IOTT-like eMTC standard is the second card that operators are preparing for the low-power, wide-coverage market. At the "Cellular Internet of Things eMTC Industry Summit" held recently, the reporter was informed that the industry is currently planning for eMTC standards, hoping to capture opportunities in the huge Internet of Things market.

Adapting multiple types of Internet of Things at different rates

Although the Internet of Things is a huge market that can be foreseen, the barriers of different industries are relatively high, and the industrial distribution in the industry has already formed. The key issue now is how the Internet of Things technology provided by operators can better integrate into each industry. in. In order to analyze the characteristics of the Internet of Things, the communication industry generally uses different speeds to distinguish different levels of the Internet of Things, and develops corresponding technologies based on different rates.

“The IoT business is relatively clear in terms of business classification.” Zhou Zhenglan, director of the industry development department of the TD Industry Alliance, believes that “there is an analysis that the most demand for IoT will be low speed, wide coverage and low by 2020. The power consumption network accounts for about 60% of the entire IoT market.” It can be said that NB-IoT is a standard tailored for low-rate, wide-coverage, low-power networks, covering environmental status detection, intelligent parking, and remote copying. Table and other services. In addition to NB-IoT, there are also local applications such as LoRa and Sigfex.

“Medium-speed IoT applications of less than 1 Mbps will account for about 30% of the total market,” Zhou said. “The technologies currently seen including EMTC are in this category, and are more suitable for smart wearable devices, vehicle management. , electronic advertising screens, etc."

IoT applications with a speed higher than 10Mbps will account for 10% of the total market, mainly for industrial control, car networking, video surveillance, etc. Industrial control also requires a low network delay, currently 1ms when 5G is set. The extension can meet the requirements.

What are the unique advantages of eMTC?

There are many options for wide coverage of low-power IoT solutions, and the industry is gradually focusing. There are three ways to carry the cellular network. The first one is based on 2G/3G/4G technology, and uses the same terminal chip bearer as the mobile phone, which is the same as the mobile phone user. The second is a local optimization scheme, including eMTC, Cat1, Cat0, etc., which can reduce cost and power consumption and enhance coverage; the third method is NB-IoT.

Key capabilities of eMTC include: support for mobility, location; lower cost, target 25% of Cat1 chips; higher speeds, up to 4x compared to GPRS. "As an enhanced machine type communication, eMTC evolved based on the LTE protocol. The 1.3 million base stations on the current network can be quickly deployed through software upgrades." Xu Xuebing, general manager of Huawei's TD-LTE field, said, "eMTC can have more connections, relative 4G is more than 60 times better, has better deep coverage, and wears more walls than LTE; it has lower power consumption and battery life of 10 years."

eMTC has the advantages of anti-theft, anti-switching, real-time temperature sensing and locating in intelligent logistics. It can monitor and locate in real time, record and upload information, and query the driving track. In smart wearable devices, it supports health monitoring, video services, data backhaul and positioning. eMTC can also use the screen as a starting point to add value to operators' pipelines. These application scenarios include: smart charging piles, waiting treasures, elevator guards, intelligent bus stop signs, and public bicycle management.

Deng Anda, technical director of China Mobile Design Institute Wireless Institute, said that the eMTC officially released in 3GPP R13 in March 2016 was designed to meet the needs of medium and low-speed IoT services. The LTE protocol was tailored and optimized. 1.4MHz bandwidth. The main goal of eMTC is to achieve strong coverage, high capacity, low power consumption and low cost.

“For China Mobile, the current eMTC device solution includes both GSM device upgrade solutions and TDD-based upgrade solutions. Currently, inventory of network devices and models is underway to evaluate the device's ability to support upgrades,” said Deng Anda. "Based on the GSM upgrade solution, the device hardware configuration is equivalent to the GSM-based upgrade to the FDD solution, and the TDD-based upgrade solution requires only software upgrades."

Industry mature business model is undetermined

EMTC's industrial chain is developing rapidly. According to Zhou Zhenglan, on the chip, Qualcomm, GCT, Intel, HiSili etc. plan to launch EMTC chips supporting TDD in the fourth quarter of 2016 to 2017; the modules will follow the chip roadmap. About one month later, the company has Miyuan, Longshang Technology, SimCOM, Telit, etc.; terminal enterprises have general rules, Bosch, Hongdian, and BBK are following up. In the vertical industry, current applications mainly include smart elevators, intelligent logistics and smart advertising lights, which will extend to the smart wear industry and the automotive industry in the future.

Zhou Lu, deputy general manager of China Mobile's Shandong Rizhao Group's customer department, said that the station card renovation in Rizhao City is a successful case of TDD. Due to the complete construction of Rizhao City and the resistance to cable and pipeline construction, the wireless communication technology based on TDD can effectively solve the final access. Rizhao City relies on the TDD network to complete the construction of the station hardware by the government. The station operation is operated by an independent bus advertising company. The vehicle information is visible in real time on the stop sign, efficient scheduling, and can also broadcast advertising video. For operators, the traffic per stop per month is as high as 30G. The total number of bus stations in Rizhao City is more than 1,000, and the space is considerable. In the past, intelligent bus stop signs based on GPRS construction appeared to be in a single form, and it was difficult to add value. With the launch of the eMTC chip in the future, the newly deployed intelligent bus stop sign can be directly based on eMTC construction, with lower cost and higher revenue.

Zhang Jian, deputy general manager of the Haikang IoT Business Unit, said that at present, CLP Haikang has integrated the safe operation of elevators into the management of the Internet of Things, creating a solution for elevator guards. The elevator market grows by 20% annually, but elevator accidents occur frequently, and once the consequences are serious. Elevator guard system is based on the operator network, using wireless Internet of Things technology to achieve real-time interconnection of provincial, city and county elevators, operational data collection and intelligent analysis, automatic fault alarm, voice communication, remote monitoring of cameras, etc. Safety supervision. At present, Hangzhou, Xining, Jiangxi, Hebei and other provinces and cities have been applied.

“We have three suggestions for the follow-up promotion of the entire business.” Zhou Zhenglan said, “The first is that the market can cut in from medium-to-high-value businesses with medium-speed and mobile appeals such as electronic advertising screens, elevator guards, intelligent bus platforms, and logistics; The second is to establish a typical application demonstration of the industry, and deepen the value-added business to the vertical industry users; the third is to do a good business model, so that eMTC can identify the direction of business development, and can explore business models with partners and vertical industry users."
