Mark Zuckerberg, executive director of Facebook, is presenting a new way of interacting with the Oculus Rift heads: an Oculus glove. A few days ago, he uploaded photos of Oculus's research lab in Redmond, Washington. Here, Michael Abrash, chief scientist of Oculus, is leading the R&D team in developing next-generation hardware. Most of the photos are related to the Institute's facilities, but in one of the pictures, Zuckerberg is using a pair of white motion control gloves to play a super hero.
Zuckerberg wrote in the picture description: "We are studying new ways to put your hands in virtual reality and augmented reality. With these gloves, you can draw, type on the virtual keyboard, and even Spider web launch like Spiderman. That's what I'm doing.†He didn't give too much detail beyond that. We saw this glove is pretty simple and paired with an Oculus Rift head. The system seems to use a third-party OptiTrack sensor instead of the common external tracking camera.
Anyone who has used Nintendo Power Glove gloves knows that gloves are a standard VR input method. However, Xiao Bian never found that Oculus showed similar input methods. It is true that VR gloves have certain problems, and they are in many ways an obstacle to other hand tracking methods. Oculus had previously acquired Nimble VR, a VR company that specializes in hand tracking technology (not through gloves), but at the moment we cannot know what will happen.
