It will challenge Tesla's strong entry into the high-end electric vehicle market.

A new car manufacturing company in Silicon Valley recently appeared, called Lucid Motors, which recently showed off its first prototype car, a high-end electric car. The company's name was formerly Atleva, which was founded primarily for the development of battery packs for electric vehicles.

After two years of research and development, Lucid Motors' first car finally took shape, although now only the Body in White can be seen. The white body refers to the body before the welding is completed but not painted, and does not include moving parts such as doors and hoods.

Recently, a reporter visited the company's headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif., where Lucid Motors secretly developed the upcoming car. In addition to seeing the "Body Body" car, there is also a car that has completed 90-95% of the car. Lucid Motors showed the reporter the car components, including the electric drive system and internal concept design.

The reporters were two executives, one was CTO Peter Rawlinson, who worked at Tesla and Jaguar, and one was Design Vice President Derek Jenkins. Jenkins worked in Mazda and designed the latest MX-5 Miata. Lucid Motors also has some employees from Tesla.

The reporter asked the name of the car, and Rawlinson refused to answer. He said that he would announce later.

Lucid Motors was founded on the basis of the ATIeva battery research and development department. The company has patented a lithium-ion battery, and its technology ensures that the battery does not significantly degrade during high-power charging cycles. This feature is critical for electric vehicles. Lucid Motors claims that the company's battery energy density is 20% higher than its competitors, mainly because of its superior cooling and energy control technology.

Rawlinson said that because the company has excellent battery technology, it developed a dual-engine system. When the car is launched, the cruising range will exceed 300 miles (482 kilometers), and the company is still considering a 400-mile (643-kilometer) version of the car. He also said that the car will install an engine on each axle, the maximum speed can exceed 200 miles (321 kilometers), but the production version of the car will limit the speed.

When the company was called ATIeva, the Edna car was previewed. This is a van with a twin-engine system with a total horsepower of 1200 and was later limited to 900 horsepower for some reasons. Despite the power drop, Edna accelerates from 0 to 60 miles per hour and only takes 2.69 seconds. Rollinson revealed that the car weighs less than 1,000 pounds (about 454 kilograms) and is more aerodynamic, and it will be faster. The reporter test drive the Edna car. At the entrance of the highway, the acceleration ability of the car is amazing.

How long does it take for the upcoming car to be fully charged? Rollinson is not willing to disclose, he just said that the car supports DC fast charging technology, because when developing cars, the company hopes that cars can be used for sharing. Which fast charging standard is used? Is it CHAdeMo or J1772 Combo? There is no answer yet.

Jenkins said that when designing the car, they tried to design a medium-sized car that was the same size as the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, but the car's interior was similar to a full-size car, such as the 7-series and S-Class. Compared to conventional internal combustion engines and conventional units, the electric drive system takes up less space and Jenkins' goal is easier to achieve.

The front end of the new car is low and short because there is no need to install the engine in front. The top is covered with a glass canopy, the sky can be seen, the front and rear passengers have a large leg rest space, and the overhead space is also abundant. Lucid Motors' new car is not a 4-door hatchback (such as the Tesla Model S). Instead, it is a modern four-door sedan.

Using modern technology, LED lights are installed in front of the car. Lucid Motors' headlights are different. Each light is emitted from a "micro lens" with 6000 microlenses on each side. The matrix of light can be precisely adjusted to show a good light field.

Lucid Motors has developed three internal design solutions, one inspired by the early morning in Santa Monica (American city), one from Santa Cruz (western California), one from Midnight in the Mojave Desert. Lucid Motors has also worked hard on other aspects of the car. For example, an infotainment system has four OLED displays that can be controlled in natural language. It supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay system, which can connect to the company from the inside of the car and remotely upgrade the software.

In the automotive industry, Level 5 represents fully autonomous driving technology and Lucid Motors will introduce Level 5 technology. Of course, when a fully self-driving car can be produced, it depends on how the law is regulated. The sensor package for the car includes lidar, general radar and camera.

Lucid Motors seems to want to build a car in the United States, it is looking for a site, and the range of choice has been reduced to several states. Rollinson said that in order to build a factory, the company may still raise funds. When it comes to sales, Lucid Motors will imitate Tesla, accept orders from the website, and may open showrooms in different places. Will Lucid Motors compete with Tesla for customers in the future? Rollinson said that electric vehicles account for a relatively small share of the luxury car market, and the space is large enough to compete for users from BMW Mercedes.
